Our Story

Why Hello!   

Nana’s Blue Greenhouse is a flower farm and plant nursery located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Our little farm is nestled between the Appalachian and the Blue Ridge mountains on a 150+ year old country farm. Our winters are often cold and bitter, our springs wet, and muddy and summer days can be long and hot; but funny enough we have found that it makes for some of the best cut flowers around. We specialize in heirloom, specialty and native flowers that we bring together in unique and luscious floral designs.

The owners of Nana’s Blue Greenhouse are Janel Louk and Rachel Butler, two best friends who decided after 17 years to actually start the business we always talked about. Although always talking about starting a business, WHAT it was didn’t materialize until the Winter of 2021 while cleaning out Janels’ mothers’ Greenhouse. That cold gray day produced two things: 1) A clean greenhouse and 2) Our bright & new business Nana’s Blue Greenhouse, and it’s been going and growing ever since. It truly has been serendipitous how everything has come together and with the outstanding interest in our little farm we have gone from not only cut flowers to offering nursery plants of heirloom, specialty and native varieties that we often feature in our bouquets.

We also have a soft spot for sustainable, natural and holistic practices. This is seen within our business in the way we treat our plants and the herbaceous list of plants we offer that have historically been used for medicinal purposes. Although we cannot recommend plants to treat specific ailments, we do promote the collection and education of plants and the history of their many uses. Also, we *currently* do not spray any of our plants with any pesticides or fungicides. It is our belief that we must be conscientious of how we treat the earth and also be transparent and honest with our customers. We are currently using only natural practices when it comes to pest control in our gardens, so far with great results! But we will always be honest with our customers, so ask us if you have any specific questions about what we are currently doing to treat our plants for disease! We hope that you enjoy plants and flowers as much as we do and want Nana’s Blue Greenhouse to be the area’s best-known stop for per-stem flower sales, bouquets, floral designs and hard to find nursery plants!
